The school holidays are upon us and the sun is out (for now) – but it already seems like an eternity since we last enjoyed a three-day weekend.
If you’ve used up all your annual leave then you’re probably longing for the next Bank Holiday.
Well, the good news is you haven’t got long to wait until the August Bank Holiday comes around.
And that means the month also brings an extra bonus day off!
The next UK bank holiday will be on the Summer Bank Holiday on Monday, August 28 – unless you live in Scotland.
The Scottish Summer Bank Holiday will be taking place earlier in the month, on Monday, August 7.
Either way, it’s the perfect excuse to save some of your precious annual leave and enjoy a three-day weekend (or even book in a last-minute summer break!).
We recommend you make the most of it – the next UK bank holiday won’t be until Christmas….
Why do we celebrate the Summer Bank Holiday?
The bank holiday is held to mark the end of the summer break, reports The Mirror, before children head back to school and autumn slowly begins to creep up.
If the idea that summer is over leaves you a bit down, then you may want to head to London for the weekend where there’ll be plenty of celebration at the Notting Hill Carnival, which takes place over the bank holiday weekend every year.
Fun fact: Initially introduced in the Bank Holidays Act 1871, this bank holiday was originally intended to give bank employees the chance to attend or play in cricket matches!
