BARCLAYS has been forced to apologise to furious customers after the bank shut off its website and apps for “maintenance”.
The firm used Twitter to warn people they would not be able to use mobile banking, the website or the bank’s Pingit app for 16 hours during the shut down.
The maintenance started late on Saturday night and was expected to go into Sunday afternoon.
The bank apologised online, writing: “We’re sorry, you won’t be able to manage your account online, by phone, in the app, or use Pingit during this time.
“You can still use your card and you can still withdraw from cash machines – select “Cash” only as all other options will be unavailable.”
They said it was part of preparation for UK ring-fencing which sees retail money separated from riskier investment banking activity.
It came in under rules aimed at preventing a re-run of the financial crisis.
They added: “Payments made into your account during our outage will be added when our work is finished.”

But angry customers were quick to tweet their disappointment at the bank with one writing: “How much maintenance does one app need?!’
@Antonysummers5 wrote: “I need transfer money to a another bank account but cant. Why is this done sunday when can be done on weekday so we able use banks.”
And @mahalaclarke added: “I think u should let us know when you’re not doing “Maintenance.”
Barclays later tweeted: “Just to keep you all updated; payments out your account during our maintenance will be completed after 1:00pm.
“Great news – our maintenance has finished early. All of our services are now back up and running. Thank you for bearing with us.
“Our maintenance is all done – payments will be processed after 1pm and international payments in the app will be available from 5:30pm.”
