Big rig protest slows traffic on Hwy. 99 in Sacramento County

A big rig protest comprised of dozens of trucks on southbound Interstate 5 and Highway 99 is causing a massive backup Friday, with traffic snarled for several miles in and around downtown Sacramento.

The drivers are protesting a federal mandate of an electronic logging device that would put truck drivers on a regulated schedule. They are calling the protest Operation Black and Blue, which is an effort by trucks across the country.

As of 12:45 p.m., the line of trucks was heading south on Highway 99 to Interstate 5 into downtown Sacramento. Some trucks formed a straight line across all lanes, preventing drivers from getting around. A few trucks even completely stopped in the road.

California Highway Patrol officers were seen trying to get the trucks to move over to allow traffic to pass.

The protest began on southbound Highway 99 in Yuba City, before hitting Interstate 5 and getting back on Highway 99 with Fresno being the final destination.
