ELMIRA, N.Y. – The Food Bank of the Southern Tier is the ‘Feeding America 2017 Food Bank of the Year.’
The organization, which serves 6 counties in the Southern Tier, beat more than 200 other food banks across the country for the title.
On Thursday, community members and state officials joined in celebrating the food bank’s hard work.
“Having a dedicated best in class staff of people who work here who are seen as resources throughout the network of food banks and also for our engagement of the community in our work through volunteerism through strategic planning through many different ways and of course we are recognized for the effectiveness of our programs that actually help address the issue of hunger in the region,” said Food Bank CEO Natasha Thompson.
Last year, the Food Bank of the Southern Tier provided 9.8 million meals to people in need.
Thompson says the actual need is about 13 million throughout the region and that the $20,000 won from the award will go toward closing that gap.
