ELMIRA, N.Y. (18 NEWS) – Hundreds of people in the Elmira area received donations from the Food Bank of the Southern Tier on Saturday.
Officials said they supplied supplemental groceries for 345 households on through their quarterly community giveaways. Clients took home juices, breads, pasta, and potatoes among other items. One volunteer said it’s an experience everyone should have at least once.
“Everybody should work at least one of these big giveaways,” volunteer Hazel Thompson said. “It is an experience that they’ll never have any other place and I encourage people to get out and volunteer.”
Thompson began volunteering at the food bank when she moved to Elmira from Vermont in 1949. She is one of the hundreds of people who volunteer at the food bank every year, but officials said they could always use more help. Especially now that summer is here.
“We need about 500 volunteers every week here at the food bank and we only really made about half that capacity,” Volunteer Coordinator Jennifer Burbank said. “So I’m of course always saying to the community, we need our volunteers more than ever especially during the summertime. Volunteer numbers tend to drop off a little bit with the kids out of school, and National Honor Society hours have been achieved for the year and vacations and things like that but the need is actually even more.”
