No. 3 Home State Bank – Small company
Job openings are a rarity at Home State Bank.
When a position does open up, it’s usually because of the company’s growth, employee retirements, or employees leaving because a spouse landed a job away that necessitated a move. When openings do pop up, the bank has little need for placing help wanted ads.
“Most of our employees that we have hired have come to us and had an application on file in case we had an opening,” said Home State Bank President and CEO Sid Jones.” It is the culture that attracts and it attracts like-minded people.”
That culture has made Home State Bank an employer of choice for young people: about 40 percent of the bank’s payroll is under age 40 ― all the more impressive given the bank’s location in Jefferson, Iowa, a community of about 4,300 people.
“In a rural community, we take a lot of pride in that,” Jones said. “A lot of our most recent hires have sought us out as an employer.”
At the bank, each day begins with team huddles. Employees are regularly recognized through a quarterly employee award program. And once a month, on “Extraordinary Fridays,” employees and customers get special perks, whether it’s free windshield cleaning at the drive-through or a $100 bill tucked into an ATM to encourage someone else to pay it forward. The days also include community service projects.
“I think the one thing that we stress is to enjoy the journey in your profession,” Jones said. “And we try to make that possible here at the bank, not only through their professional development as an employee, but also the relationship they have with their fellow team members and allow them to interact with the community at the level they choose.”
