Majority in poll: Trump rhetoric could ‘accidentally’ involve US in international conflict

A majority of Americans agree that President Trump could inadvertently engage the United States in an international conflict due to his rhetoric, according to a new survey released by the George Washington University Battleground Poll.

Sixty-eight percent of those polled said they concur that Trump’s “words and actions could get us accidentally involved in an international conflict.” Twenty-nine percent, however, disagreed with this statement.

The survey was conducted after Trump vowed North Korea will face “fire, fury and frankly power” should it continue making threats against the United States. His rhetoric alarmed many due to its aggressiveness.

“The Battleground Poll data show that more Americans object to President Trump’s character than his agenda,” Michael Cornfield, Associate Professor of Political Management Michael Cornfield, said in a press release.

“If there is anything approaching a consensus in today’s sharply divided America, it’s that Trump speaks and behaves inappropriately given the office he holds.”

Similarly, a majority, 71 percent, said Trump’s “behavior is not what I expect from a president.” Twenty-seven percent disagree with this statement.

The survey was conducted from Aug. 13 to 17 and polled 1,000 registered voters. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
