If there’s anything to learn from social media nowadays, it’s that you should never be afraid to shoot your shot, because on rare occasions, it might actually work. Case it point, John Mayer flirted with Nicki Minaj on Twitter on Friday night, and not only was the rapper’s response to his quip perfect in every way, but it’s already making fans ship the duo — some fans, that is. Others are pointing out problematic comments Mayer made in 2010 about black women, which will likely make you think twice before hopping on the bandwagon.
The recent flirtationship began when Mayer processed a thought out loud to his followers, tweeting, “I spend an inordinate amount of time per day wondering if Nicki Minaj would like me or not.” (To be honest, doesn’t everyone spend an inordinate amount of time wondering if Minaj would like them?)
The “Rake It Up” rapper caught wind of Mayer’s tweet and fired back with a response that couldn’t have been more flawless, referring to Mayer’s 2001 song, “Your Body Is a Wonderland,” she wrote back, “Would my body be your wonderland?” She also then posted a separate tweet saying, “Asking for a friend,” as if she’s not the friend in question.
Since this is Minaj we’re talking about here, Mayer was definitely pretty taken aback. In other words, he was left speechless. Mayer wrote back, “Please hold, losing my sh*t. This isn’t my reply yet.” As of right now, the 39-year-old singer has yet to tweet out his formal response to Minaj.

And Mayer wasn’t the only one who freaked out. Plenty of fans were obviously living for whatever was going on between the two of them.
Some couldn’t seem to contain themselves.

While others saw the whole thing as pure entertainment.
This is the best thing that’s happened on Twitter in a long time. I needed this.

Though a lot of people were living for this exchange, not everyone was a fan. Some users took the opportunity to recall a 2010 interview that Mayer did with Playboy, in which he makes a comment about not dating black women, even comparing his genitals to a literal white supremacist.
When asked if black women “throw themselves” at him (whatever that means), Mayer told Playboy he doesn’t “open myself up to it.” He continued, “My d*ck is sort of like a white supremacist. I’ve got a Benetton heart and a fu*kin’ David Duke c*ck.” Mayer went on to name a few famous black women he found attractive — like Holly Robinson Peete, Kerry Washington, and Karyn Parsons, who played Hilary on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air — only to sort of reduce them to being undateable. (Bustle reached out to Mayer’s rep about the Playboy comments, but did not receive an immediate response.)
The interview took place years ago, but it’s clear that a lot of people haven’t forgotten about it, nor should they.

Whether or not a romantic relationship actually blossoms between Mayer and Minaj, you might want to think twice before shipping them. And maybe while the singer thinks of a way to properly respond to Minaj, he can also think about whether or not he wants to clarify, or even apologize for, those problematic comments he made.
