Nintendo’s biggest hits and misses

With the release of its latest system, Nintendo seems to have a hit on its hands.

Sales figures for the video game giant’s two-in-one Switch console were released as part of the company’s quarterly earnings report this week. From its worldwide release on March 3 through June, the Switch sold 4.7 million units — way more than analysts predicted — and that’s despite supply issues that have fans in Japan relying on possibly rigged raffle systems for their chance at purchasing one.

Switch sales helped buoy Nintendo, whose U.S. headquarters is in Redmond, through the first half of 2017. The company has racked up $578 million in gross profit ($145 million net) after operating with a $46 million deficit through the first six months of 2016.
