The Suns’ acquisition of guard Troy Daniels, along with a second-round pick, from Memphis could be a little awkward at the beginning of their new relationship.

Daniels and Suns guard Devin Booker had a memorable exchange last year, and now they are teammates.

From an azcentral sports story in February:

(Booker) was involved in a scuffle near the end of Wednesday night’s loss to the Memphis Grizzlies. Troy Daniels launched a 3 that Booker contested. The shot dropped. Booker was called for a foul. According to several Phoenix players, Daniels talked trash.

That led to pushing … . After a long review – even Suns center Tyson Chandler yelled from the bench for officials to hurry up and make a decision – three players were ejected. Three others, including Booker, received technical fouls.

After the game, Booker had harsh words for Daniels.

“I don’t know why he would be talking to me,” Booker said. “He’s been on five teams in three years and he has the nerve to talk trash to me. He’s on a winning team, so you have those muscles when you’re on a winning team. It is what it is. We will see him again.”

Well, those words now certainly ring true. The Suns gather in the Valley for media day Monday, before heading up to Flagstaff for a week of training camp.

Daniels comes to the Suns along with a 2018 second-round pick from the Grizzlies in exchange for a conditional Suns’ 2018 second-round pick. He’ll help fill the hole created when rookie Davon Reed went down with a knee injury that will sideline him four to six months.

Daniels, a 6-4, 205-pound guard, is a four-year NBA veteran who has played 162 games with Houston, Minnesota, Charlotte and, most recently, Memphis. In 2016-17, Daniels averaged 8.2 points while shooting 38.9 percent from 3-point range in career highs of 17.7 minutes and 67 games with the Grizzlies. The 26-year-old scored in double figures 23 times last season, including a career-high 31 points against the Lakers on Dec. 3.

Holding a career 3-point mark of 40.6 percent, Daniels has averaged 6.2 points, 1.2 rebounds and 13.2 minutes over his four-year NBA career. Since he entered the league in 2013-14, his 40.6 percent mark from 3-point range is 10th-best in the league among those with at least 250 makes.

He was undrafted in 2013 and began his pro career with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers of the NBA G League before signing with the Rockets late in the 2013-14 season and becoming a member of their rotation in the 2014 playoffs. He split time among Houston, Minnesota and Charlotte in 2014-15 and played the 2015-16 season with the Hornets before being dealt to the Grizzlies in July 2016.

A native of Roanoke, Va., Daniels played in college at Virginia Commonwealth University and was a member of the Rams’ 2011 Final Four team.

The Suns’ camp will conclude with an open scrimmage at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 29, at the Prescott Valley Event Center, home of the Suns’ NBA G League affiliate, the Northern Arizona Suns.
