A man with a knife was shot by Miami-Dade County police at Miami International Airport late Thursday, police say.
Airport officials said at least one shot was fired in Terminal J but that the “situation is under control.” It is unclear why the person was shot.
Miami-Dade police spokesman Alvaro Zabaleta said the shooting happened between 8:30 and 9 p.m.
“A security incident led to a police-involved shooting,” Zabaleta said. “Everything is under control now and there’s no threat.”
The man, who has not been identified, was taken to a nearby hospital. Information on his condition was not available. Police are reviewing security camera footage and FDLE is investigating, Zabaleta added.
According to Twitter user @ShawnWoodford, Concourse J was evacuated and police were seen surrounding an airplane at Gate J7 on the tarmac. Passengers were moved to Concourse H.
For some people on social media, the shooting has created commotion at a place that already has been pretty hectic because of Hurricane Irma. By Friday afternoon, almost 100 flights had been canceled in anticipation of the monster storm.
