Suspect in kidnapping of 2-year-old in custody after crash; child recovered

DETROIT, MI — Police recovered a 2-year-old girl for whom an Amber Alert was issued in Metro Detroit Tuesday morning.

Police said Sondra Renee was taken about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 1 after Grady L. Barrett, 42, went to her aunt’s home in the 21000 block of Karl Street and produced a weapon, according to the alert. The aunt was babysitting for the mother at the time.

Barrett left in a black 2009 GMC Sierra pickup truck, Michigan plate #DAS-8417, with a trailer on the back with a sign for G&G Landscaping, Snow Removal and Grass Cutting.

After police located and attempted to stop Barrett near the Ohio border, he fled in the SUV and led police on a nearly one-hour pursuit that ended with a crash near Seven Mile and Meyers on Detroit’s east side, WXYZ-TV, Channel 7 News reports.

Live helicopter video from a Channel 7 News helicopter showed the suspect’s vehicle stopped beneath a tree after it suffered front end damage. More than a dozen police vehicles responded.

Barrett was hospitalized with minor injuries and the child was taken to the hospital as a precaution, Channel 7 reports.
