UPDATED: Police investigating bank robbery in Lake George | Local

LAKE GEORGE — Police are investigating a bank robbery at the Trustco Bank branch in Lake George on Friday afternoon.

A man told an employee at the Route 9L bank branch that he had a weapon, but none was displayed, according to police. Police said they were not releasing how much money he was able to steal.

The incident happened around 1:10 p.m., and the bank branch remained closed as of late afternoon as police forensic experts hunted for evidence.

He was last seen fleeing on foot across Route 9L, heading south. Police initially set up a perimeter between Route 9 and 9L to Bloody Pond Road, hoping the man had not fled the immediate area.

He was described as a white male between 40 and 50 years old, about 6 feet tall, wearing a brown Carhartt-style jacket and dark brown pants. Police believe he may have fled in an older silver sport utility vehicle, possibly a Ford Bronco, Warren County Undersheriff Shawn Lamouree said. A surveillance photo from the bank was released late Friday afternoon.

Warren County Sheriff Bud York said his office and the State Police were working together on the investigation.

A State Police helicopter and police dogs were assisting with the search.

Anyone with information in the case was asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at 518-743-2500.

Police reviewed surveillance footage from the nearby Stewart’s Shops store, according to employee Keri Trevellyan.

At police request, Lake George Central School District was put in lockout mode for a period Friday afternoon as a precaution.

Rutnik said students and staff were alerted by an announcement to the lockout, which does not allow anyone to come in or leave the buildings.

The school district recently added a school messaging system to alert parents and the community, as well as utilizing an email “blast” system to alert concerned parties that everyone is safe.

The bank holdup was the third in the region in six weeks, and second in Warren County in the same period.

The NBT Bank branch in Glens Falls was robbed at knifepoint on Nov. 29, and the robber there has not been caught.

The Adirondack Trust Co. branch in Saratoga Springs was held up on Dec. 20, with a suspect arrested hours later for that robbery.
