A robber is on the loose after holding up a Walnut Creek bank Friday afternoon, according to police.
Around 3 p.m., a man in his early to mid-50s entered the Chase Bank at 1895 Ygnacio Valley Road and walked up to a bank teller. He pulled up his shirt, displaying a handgun in the waistband of his pants, and demanded the teller hand over money, according to a police statement. The robber fled on foot after the teller complied.
Thirty minutes later, a Walnut Creek police officer noticed a man who matched the suspect’s description standing in the parking lot of the Countrywood Shopping Center, a mile away from the bank. But as the officer approached, the man sped away in a blue, early 1990s Chevy pickup truck.
Officers started to chase after him but cut off the pursuit out of concern for public safety after the man started driving eastbound against traffic on Treat Boulevard.
It’s unknown how much money the robber got away with, a Walnut Creek officer said. The suspect had grey hair, a mustache and was wearing a white shirt and black hat. Police are asking anyone with information about him to contact Detective Guy Ezard at 925-943-5878.
