Thanks to his consistent presence on cable news, especially Fox News programming, White House Deputy Assistant Sebastian Gorka has been one of the more visible of President Donald Trump’s hires in his administration. He’s also among the more controversial, stemming from a number of reports that have come out since his appointment:
- In February, The Associated Press reported that Gorka had not yet gotten a security clearance, even though his job was, ostensibly, national security-related.
- In April, the White House was still not answering questions about Gorka’s clearance, even after multiple reports of his ties to anti-Semitic groups in Hungary.
- At that point, a BuzzFeed News report said that he still had no security clearance, with one official saying that “it was never clear what his qualifications were for any sort of posting.” The same source added that “he basically sits in the White House canteen drinking coffee between Fox News live hits” since he can’t review intelligence.
On Thursday morning, Rolling Stone released a new profile of Gorka by Bob Dreyfuss. One official who spoke to Dreyfuss backs up past reporting, saying, “His only job appears to be to go on talk radio or Fox News to defend the indefensible,” while another source provided a new item for the story: The White House tried moving Gorka, with no success.
“The White House tried to find him a job at another agency,” said the source. in question. “Nobody wanted him.”
The article also includes comments from experts who evaluated the legitimacy of Gorka’s Ph.D. One said that it was “about as legitimate as if he had been awarded it by Trump University” while another said, “He might as well have mail-ordered his Ph.D.”
