With Bryce Harper unavailable, Nationals turn to Brian Goodwin in right field

SAN FRANCISCO — Bryce Harper will begin serving his freshly reduced three-game suspension Wednesday night as the Nationals wrap up their three-game series with the Giants. Max Scherzer will pitch the finale opposite Giants right-hander Matt Cain, who presents a favorable matchup for left-handed hitting Brian Goodwin, who will replace Harper in right field. Goodwin has a .686 OPS in 20 big league plate appearances this season.

With Chris Heisey on the disabled list, the Nationals were carrying one extra outfielder, Goodwin, when Harper was suspended. With Goodwin in the starting lineup, Wilmer Difo and Adam Lind are the most natural bench options to fill in there if needed, though neither is a natural outfielder, and both would likely represent significant defensive downgrades from Goodwin, Michael A. Taylor or Jayson Werth.

Offensively, Dusty Baker chose Daniel Murphy to fill in for Harper in the third spot, setting up a right-left-right combination with Jayson Werth hitting second and Ryan Zimmerman hitting fourth.
