WWE Raw recovered from a stretch of lackluster shows with one brimming with fun.

The fallout from Sunday’s Extreme Rules pay-per-view led to a wild night where savagery and comedy co-existed. Samoa Joe was a revelation as the red brand’s new monster. The Miz wrestled a man in a bear suit. And the Enzo Amore mystery kept fans guessing.

As the new No. 1 contender to the Universal Championship, Joe filled the role Braun Strowman played for much of the year.

He threatened the show’s authority figure, left destruction in his wake and brought an electricity to the product. He may end up being the fish WWE uses to feed its shark Brock Lesnar come Great Balls of Fire, but for one night, The Destroyer was the heart of Raw and it was beautiful.

Read on for a full breakdown of Monday’s show, from Bray Wyatt clashing with Roman Reigns to Joe standing tall in the main event.

Bray Wyatt promised to pass judgment on Roman Reigns and the rest of the men in the Fatal 5-Way match on Sunday. They would all be punished, he told fans.

Reigns emerged, clocking The Eater of Worlds with a right hand.

Once the match began, each man went for their signature moves during a high-energy exchange. Wyatt grounded The Big Dog as things slowed down.

Wyatt went after and hurt Reigns’ left shoulder. The babyface charged back regardless.

To close out a hard-fought battle, Reigns hit a spear to put Wyatt away.

    Result

    Reigns wins via pinfall.

    Memorable Moments and Quotes

  • “I am still here and I am still alive and I am still every bit of the god that I’ve always been.”—Wyatt.
  • Dueling “Let’s go, Roman!” and “Roman sucks!” chants break out.
  • Wyatt counters a Superman Punch with a uranage.
  • Wyatt floors Reigns with a clothesline out on the floor.

Analysis

Raw thankfully bucked recent tradition and didn’t start with a lengthy promo that set up a match for later in the night. The quick movement from Wyatt’s speech to brief brawl to actual bout infused energy into the early part of the show.

It wasn’t a fresh matchup by any means, but one of the more intense showdowns between these two in recent memory.

This didn’t feel like it meant a lot, though. Reigns has beaten Wyatt plenty before. And there were no clear stakes.

Still, Reigns and Wyatt had the crowd revved up by the end of it.

Elias Samson shared a new song with the audience. He sang of Dean Ambrose losing the Intercontinental Championship.

The Lunatic Fringe interrupted. He knocked Samson to the floor before taking the mic. He demanded a rematch with The Miz.

The champ appeared on the big screen. He announced he was having a championship celebration later in the night.

    Samson blindsided Ambrose.

Later on, Ambrose hunted for The Miz backstage. Angle asked the former champ to leave the building.

    Memorable Moments and Quotes

  • “Who wants to walk with Elias?”—Samson.
  • “This city has no hope, and I didn’t have to look far.”—Samson.
  • “As a musician, he should be arrested.”—Corey Graves.

Analysis

Samson is generating decent heat. He should start playing and singing worse, though, to make himself more hateable.

It’s great to see Ambrose angry about losing the IC title. His pursuit of that prize can act as a guiding force for his character.

This wasn’t a memorable segment, but it may set up some intriguing fare for down the road. The burgeoning feud between him and Ambrose is a step up for him and a step down for The Lunatic Fringe. It has potential to be a strong way to introduce The Drifter.

Samoa Joe claimed not to fear Brock Lesnar. Instead, he said he was envious of Lesnar’s schedule and championship.

Paul Heyman stepped out to confront Joe. He played up The Destroyer’s accolades before reminding him all the stars Lesnar has gone through.

Heyman tried to exit after talking up the bout at Great Balls of Fire. Joe wouldn’t let him leave. He choked out the manager in the center of the ring.

    Memorable Moments and Quotes

  • “I want everything Brock Lesnar has and I want to take it from him.”—Joe.
  • Heyman describes Joe as “the man who has left wreckage every place he’s ever been.”
  • “Samoa Joe, you are the worst-case scenario.”—Heyman.
  • “I’m going to wrap my arms around your throat.”—Joe to Heyman.

Analysis

Joe has quickly established himself as one of WWE’s best talkers. He is a convincing sadist and predator and he showed that here.

Heyman was masterful here as he played up how much of a threat Joe is to Lesnar. He did more for The Destroyer’s character in a few minutes than the Raw writing team has done in months.

And this scene’s final image—Heyman out cold and face down—was a powerful one. It not only signaled how dangerous Joe is, it will be the catalyst for fury like we’ve never seen from Lesnar.

The confident champions dominated their opponents. Cesaro and Sheamus put away Heath Slater and Rhyno in mere seconds.

Sheamus mocked The Hardys and the fans who celebrated their return. He and Cesaro showed off their tag titles.

    Result

Cesaro and Sheamus win via pinfall.

    Memorable Moments and Quotes

  • “For all intents and purposes, Cesaro and Sheamus went into The Hardys house and beat them.”—Graves.
  • Sheamus puts Slater away with a Brogue Kick.

Grade

C+

Analysis

As much it made this match less exciting, this one-sided performance is just what Cesaro and Sheamus needed. They came out of the gates running, claiming an easy victory after former titleholders.

Their promo was a touch awkward but had the right amount of cockiness.

Backstage, TJP wanted to cash in on the title shot Neville promised him. The champion told him to be patient and to take care of business later in the night and he’d talk to Angle about it.

TJP controlled Mustafa Ali from the get-go. A Detonation Kick ended this early.

Neville stepped out. He attacked TJP, leaving him laying on the entrance ramp, telling he’d get a title shot on Tuesday’s 205 Live.

    Result

    TJP wins via pinfall.

    Memorable Moments and Quotes

  • TJP kicks Ali off the top turnbuckles.
  • “Whilst I am the King of the Cruiserweights, I’m not a miracle worker.”—Neville.

Grade

Analysis

This match was a throwaway. The interactions between Neville and TJP was the real entertainment.

Neville’s facial expressions have been dynamite all year. He looked frustrated, slightly fearful of TJP and furious that he has to deal with him.

This story is moving a bit quickly at the moment. Hopefully, WWE doesn’t sprint through it. It could be a fun meeting of two villains.

Goldust delivered a speech from his director’s chair. He talked about how successful he will be and how he will take down R-Truth.

R-Truth did his own version of the movie-centric promo.

    Memorable Moments and Quotes

  • “They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Consider me smitten.”—Goldust.
  • “The golden age is back.”—Goldust.

Grade

B+

Analysis

It’s been mighty fun to have Goldust classic back. He seems recharged by the character shift and with the added spotlight on him.

All of a sudden, he’s one of the most intriguing characters on the roster. R-Truth’s contributions haven’t been as memorable, but offer a nice counterbalance.

The Bizarre One is in the midst of a making a feud with R-Truth a surprise hit. That’s an impressive feat.

Before Raw, Titus O’Neil tried to recruit Akira Tozawa.

Angle pulled Graves aside before the match. They shared another secret conversation. Meanwhile, Ambrose sneaked back into the building.

Apollo Crews watched on as Titus O’Neil took on Kalisto. The big man lost focus but still managed to club the luchador.

Kalisto stole a win with a roll-up and a handful of tights.

    Result

    Kalisto wins pinfall.

    Memorable Moments and Quotes

  • “Titus might be crunk, but I’m lit tonight.”—Cole.
  • O’Neil catches Kalisto in mid-air.

D

Analysis

The awkward, ugly match is befitting this stalling story.

The Titus Brand angle has been a wash. It has done little to help Crews. It has failed to entertain.

It’s going around in circles in a dank corner of the Raw universe.

Asked about getting attacked recently, Enzo Amore flirted with Charly Caruso. Big Cass denied being the mystery assailant.

Later, Amore discovered Big Cass on the floor, the victim of an attack himself. The big man found some gold chains near him.

Amore had to find a new partner for his clash against Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson—Big Show.

He joked around with The World’s Largest Athlete. Big Show played along.

Gallows and Anderson soon fell victim to the giant. He bowled over The Club before hurling Amore into Anderson to put away the heels.

    Result

Big Show and Amore win via pinfall.

    Memorable Moments and Quotes

  • “I’m 4G. I’m well-connected.”—Amore.
  • “I weight 206. You in here with a heavyweight.”—Amore.

Grade

Analysis

The mystery angle continues to have promise. It’s moving along at a steady, slow-burn pace.

The shenanigans in the ring were fun. Amore and Big Show offered the show some needed comic relief. This was one of Amore’s funnier exchanges in a long while.

The Club, meanwhile, played the doormats. WWE has had no issue with cutting down Gallows and Anderson at the knees for the sake of elevating others or in this case providing a touch of entertainment.

Maryse praised her husband before welcoming him to the ring. A man in a bear suit stood in the ring with a congratulatory sign.

The Miz called his latest reign a “comeback tour.”

He proposed a toast to himself. The champ and Maryse realized that neither of them hired the bear.

The Miz beat him up and unmasked him, thinking he was Ambrose.

Staff rolled down a giant present to the ring. The Miz trashed the gift with a steel chair. It was a grandfather clock, not Ambrose.

The Lunatic Fringe revealed himself to be one of the cameramen. He attacked the IC champ.

    Memorable Moments and Quotes

  • “That chant would mean so much more if you didn’t do it for every Superstar.”—The Miz on fans chanting “You deserve it!”
  • “May the world never know a time where I’m not the intercontinental champion.”—The Miz.
  • “It’s timeless, just like you.”—Maryse to The Miz.

Grade

Analysis

The Miz vs. Ambrose rivalry hasn’t had a ton of spark, but WWE did well to infuse energy and originality into this feud here.

The segment moved along quickly. It featured the hilarious image of The Miz wrestling a giant gift. And it played up Ambrose’s wild-card status without being goofy.

Ambrose chasing down the gold could be excellent if there are more wild moments like this.

Bliss bragged about her title win at Extreme Rules backstage. Kurt Angle trashed Bliss’ This is Your Life segment from last week before announcing she’d be facing Nia Jax with the title on the line.

Bliss went backstage, trying to turn the other women in the division against Jax. Dana Brooke and Mickie James weren’t having it.

Brooke and James stood at ringside as Jax flung the champ around the ring.

Jax dominated the contest. Bliss incited James and Brooke which allowed her to escape with a disqualification win. After the bell, Jax chased off Bliss before clubbing the babyfaces.

    Result

    Bliss wins via disqualification.

    Memorable Moments and Quotes

  • “I’m done with Bayley. She’s in my past.”—Bliss.
  • “Ladies, we have a Nia Jax problem.”—Bliss.

Grade

B-

Analysis

The short match and its aftermath allowed Jax to look like a monster. It showed off Bliss’ cowardice and craftiness.

And WWE inserted an interesting dynamic into this narrative. James and Brooke may and should continue to be Bliss’ antagonists. A crowded title picture would be a welcome sight.

Joe threatened Angle backstage before Seth Rollins stepped out to stand up for the GM. Angle set up a match between the rivals.

The Destroyer and Rollins brawled once the bell rang. The babyface held his own but eventually fell to the stronger man.

Joe battered Rollins in and out of the ring.

Rollins charged back a few times, but the powerhouse continued to stomp out each attempt. Bray Wyatt’s music distracted Rollins, allowing Joe to clamp on the Coquina Clutch.

    Result

    Joe wins by referee stoppage.

    Memorable Moments and Quotes

  • “Are you in my way?”—Joe to Angle.
  • Joe yanks Rollins off the top rope.
  • Rollins hits a Falcon Arrow on the big man.

Grade

B+

Analysis

The bout allowed Rollins and Joe to wrap up their feud and in such a way that launched Joe forward. He came out of this looking like more of a threat to Lesnar than he did going in.

The announcers made a huge effort to sell Joe as a monster.

The Destroyer dominated Rollins for much of the match, slowly tearing the babyface apart. As moves on to face Lesnar, the seeds have been planted for Rollins vs. Wyatt down the road.
